Tarig Abubakar & the Afro-Nubians

(Worldbeat)

The late Tarig Abubakar hailed from Khartoum, Sudan, at the crossroads of African and Arabic culture. Abubakar sings in Arabic, but his music was pan-African, derived from styles as diverse as shaaby-rock from Egypt, Amharic soul from Ethiopia, rumba-soukous from Zaire, and Sudan's own traditional haqeeba music. After settling in Toronto, Abubakar formed the Afro-Nubians, a ten-piece band with players from Ghana, Somalia, Uganda, Kenya, and Zaire. Abubakar fronted the band as singer and sax player. On Tour to Africa, the title track is described in the liner notes as "a gentle, swaying safari to 45 countries, from Algeria to Zaire." "Unity" is a plea for pleace and harmony in his homeland. The Afro-Nubians, on this album, are Adam Solomon, Kobena Acquaa-Harrison, Solomon Hasballa, Eshet Mengesha, Booker T., Misara Ghandi, Zafrino, Kobena Rueben, Bishop Okele, Godfrey Sekijoba, Hamad Ismail, Tarig Tijani, Walid Abdelaziz, Hadi Ahmed, Joseph Ashong, and Kofi Ackah. Adubakar died in an automobile accident in the Sudan, January 28, 1998.
