A songwriter based in Sudbury, Ontario, Erin Benjamin's music is, as her web page states, "an eclectic blend of folk, pop and jazz and is characterized by open tunings, unconventional phrasing, unusual chord progressions and powerful vocals. The result is a dramatic, sensual, passionately original sound that defines the tribulation and ardour of her 28 years on the planet." This is an apt description of Benjamin's music.
A winner in the 1996 Ontario Council of Folk Festival's "Songs from the Heart" songwriting competition with her entry, "Long Hard Fall," Benjamin has released her debut CD, Erin Benjamin. The album sounds more like a release from a long-established artist. The arrangements are sophisticated and exciting and the vocals are terrific. Benjamin is a talent to watch.
Erin Benjamin was produced by Dick van Raadshooven, Benjamin's musical director who accompanies her on stage with cello, bass, guitar, and percussion. His influence can be detected in the beautiful, jazz-style arrangements of many of Benjamin's songs.
