Juno Award-winning La Bottine Souriante (the name translates as "smiling boot") may be the best known folk group from Quebec. La Bottine Souriante arose as part of the fresh and exciting atmosphere that accompanied the founding of the Parti Québécois and the rediscovery of Québec roots and traditions that gave its people a renewed sense of pride. Over its long performing career the band has undergone several changes of personnel and direction, but what remains is always a lively, instrumentally-oriented sound. All of their early albums have been reissued on CD.

Y'A Ben du Changement (1978) and Chic N' Swell (1982) emphasize the traditional reels and the chansons à répondre (call-and-response singing) of Quebec folk music. The album features mouth music, step dancing, and fiddle pieces all played with delight, respect, and a strong underlying sense of humour. The personnel on this album are André Marchand, Daniel Roy, Martin Racine, Yves Lambert, and Mario Forest. La Traversée de l'Atlantique continues in the same vein, with what appears to be the same personnel (the cast was accidentally left off the CD liner notes). With La Traversée, the band began to add its own original compositions into the mix. By Tout Comme au Jour de l'An (1987) and Je Voudrais Changer D'Chapeau (1988), the material was becoming increasingly eclectic. Je Voudrais Changer won a Juno in 1990 in the "Roots & Traditional" category. On these albums the personnel consist of Michel Bordeleau, Yves Lambert, André Marchand, Denis Fréchette, and Martin Racine.

With the release of Jusq'aux P'tites Heures in 1991, which won a 1993 Juno in the "Roots & Traditional" category, the band underwent a fundamental change in personnel and sound. Wildly eclectic by this point, the band added trumpets, trombones, and saxophones to the traditional base. The enlarged band includes Régent Archambault, Michel Bordeleau, Laflèche Doré, Robert Ellis, Denis Fréchette, Jean Fréchette, Yves Lambert, Martin Racine, and André Verreault. With the release of La Mistrine, La Bottine Souriante appears to have veered its brassy, energetic mix back towards its roots. La Mistrine received a Porcupine in the "Mme La Bolduc Award for Québécois Folklore" category in 1994.
