Bristol's Hope

(Traditional)

Forming under the name Bristol's Hope (taken from an historical Newfoundland place name), the Newfoundland band plays primarily traditional music from the area, with a few modern pieces done in the old style. With this lineup, you get what you'd expect--a bouncy delivery of dance tunes and a respectful interpretation of the songs. Particularly nice on Lately Come Over (1997) is the lovely"The Cliffs of Baccalieu," sung in its original 1934 version by Anita Best. "Cliffs" was introduced to many listeners by Stan Rogers.

The band is comprised of well-known musicians from other groups: Anita Best, folklorist, solo performer and collaborator with Pamela Morgan; Baxter Wareham, vocalist and button accordionist, also a solo performer and member of various bands, including The Wareham Brothers and The Breakwater Boys; Kelley Russell, bouzouki, bodrhan, and member of Figgy Duff and The Plankerdown Band; Sandy Morris, guitars and banjo and a member of The Wonderful Grand Band and Figgy Duff; and Derek Pelley, bass player from Figgy Duff and Rawlins Cross.
