Edith Butler

(French-Canadian; Acadian; Contemporary; Singer-Songwriter)

Acadian chanteuse Edith Butler, from Caraquet, New Brunswick, began her career as a French-Canadian folksinger playing coffeehouses and festivals in the early 60's. Drawing upon a repertoire of Acadian folksongs, she played the Mariposa Folk Festival in 1970 and began doing television shows, including a regular spot on the CBC program, Singalong Jubilee. Her early, folk, albums are out of print, with the exception of L'Acadie S'Marie, which has been reissued on CD. Her popularity ultimately led her to abandon the folk genre as she began releasing pop material and disco-oriented party records. It is to be hoped that more of her traditional work will eventually be reissued.
