Based in Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, Ceilidh Friends emerged as a group of four musicians who met at house ceilidhs to sing and tell stories. Discovering that they had a lot in common, musically, they began practising and soon were performing at events such as the northern folk festivals: Folk on the Rocks, Midway Lake Music Festival, and The Great Northern Music and Arts Festival in Inuvik. They also hosted the annual CBC North radio Christmas Ceilidh for five years.
The members of Ceilidh Friends are Moria Cameron, Steve Goff, Dawn Lacey and Steve Lacey. Cameron was born in Toronto to a musical family. She lists as her major influences Frankie Armstrong, Louis Killen and Ewan MacColl. Steve Goff, born and raised in London, England, began as a rock musician before turning to folk and blues. He plays anything from classical to jazz, folk, and blues. Dawn Lacey grew up on the Canadian prairies. She was influenced by Buffy Sainte-Marie, Connie Kaldor, Paddy Tutty and her brother, singer-songwriter Norman Walker. Steve Lacey, born in England, was raised in Saskatchewan. He considers his greatest influences to be the music of Stan Rogers and Gordon Lightfoot.
Ceilidh Friends perform traditional, modern, and Northern songs on Yellowknife Evening (1994). Combining voice with instruments like guitar, recorder, Appalachian dulcimer, hammered dulcimer, bodhran, spoons, and moose bones, the album is a treat for those who enjoy traditional music, instrumentation, and homespun vocals. The Spirit of Giving (1997) is a Yuletide celebration featuring a mix of traditional favourites such as "The Holly and the Ivy" alongside newer, folksy material like Allan Bell's "Bread and Fishes."
