A regular on the venerated Don Messer Jubilee and Tommy Hunter TV shows, Al Cherny, née Chernywech, born in Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1932, was a splendid fiddler who shifted from style to style with ease. In addition to winning most of the fiddle championships in Canada, he was also a highly-regarded studio musician who recorded for Sylvia Tyson, Jesse Winchester, and others in the 1970's. Cherny died in 1987. The PolyTel compact disc--A Tribute to Al Cherny--captures a fine sampling of the spectrum of Cherny's adroit playing. It's a pity the disc contains no liner notes to provide more information on this accomplished, polished musician.
