Ottawa troubadour Michael Mitchell has led a dual career, as an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, and as an entertainer who sings Scottish, Irish, and Canadian folksongs at clubs and in schools. Among his accomplishments, he is also the author of the book Ducimus--The Regiments of the Canadian Infantry. Mitchell's albums are theme based. Lest We Forget is a collection of songs "dedicated to the men and women who have defended the peace and freedom of our nation on the field of honour." Mitchell's delivery of Bogle's "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and "No Man's Land," Whittaker's "The Last Farewell," and the traditional "Arthur McBride" stand up well. Pub Night, Volume 1 is an uptempo set of songs recorded live. Highlights include "The Hills of Connemara," "Silver Sea," "Streets Of London," and "Farewell to Nova Scotia." Canada Is ... is a collection of songs about Canada including "Log Drivers Waltz," "Sonny's Dream," "Canadian Railroad Trilogy," and "Canada Is." The similarly titled Canada Is for Kids is an album of songs about Canada aimed at schools. There's a separate book of lyrics and music that can be purchased to be used with singalongs.
