Neil Young

(Contemporary; Singer-Songwriter)

Ontario singer-songwriter and Juno Hall of Famer Neil Young has been a mainstream rocker since the mid-60's when he teamed up with Stephen Stills and Richie Furray to form Buffalo Springfield. Later he collaborated with Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Afterwards, he pursued a solo career, forming bands like the Rockets, Crazy Horse, and The Stray Gators. Despite his rock orientation, he has skirted close to folk at several points with folk/rock songs and lyrics that have become deeply associated with the singer-songwriter spectrum of folk music--songs like "After the Gold Rush," "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," "Southern Man," "Heart of Gold," "Harvest Moon," and "Helpless." Deciding which of Young's albums to highlight in this guide was put to a vote on the rec.music.folk Internet newsgroup. The consensus among Neil Young fans was that the following are the most "folkish" of Young's albums: Neil Young, After The Gold Rush, Harvest, Old Ways, Harvest Moon, and Unplugged. His purely rock albums are not listed.
