The Anthology of Canadian Folk Music / Anthologie de la musique folklorique canadienne is a five-CD box-set bilingual compilation containing over five hours of music. The material is drawn from mainly 1950s and 1960s sources, featuring the popular performers of that era--Alan Mills, Hélène Baillargeon, Charles Jordan, Joyce Sullivan, Jacques Labrecque, Diane Oxner, Raoul Roy, Tom Kines, Edith Butler, Jean Price, and Yves Albert. The CDs are organized thematically. CD1 is "Riddle Songs and Traditional Ballads" and "Legendary Ballads and Historical Songs." CD2 is "Romantic Adventures and Tragedies" and "Love Ballads and Laments." CD3 is `Love's Labours Lost" and "Songs of Courtship and Marriage." CD4 is "Songs and Ballads of the Lumber Camps" and "Miscellaneous Work Songs." CD5 is "Sociable and Social Songs" and "Miscellaneous." The bilingual English and French liner notes offer commentary on each song of the compilation in an accompanying 135-page booklet. While much of the material sounds dated, with a taint of parlour, there are some gems in the collection. Unfortunately, for the collector, there are no recording dates or notes about the sources of the recordings.
