Mariposa '93: A Compilation of Canadian Musicians

(Traditional; Contemporary; Singer-Songwriter)

The Mariposa Folk Festival has been one of the leading folk festivals in North America since its glory days in the early 60's when it featured performers like Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, and Ian & Sylvia. But along the way it changed its location several times, as well as its focus. When the folk music revival of the 1960's began to wane, organizers changed the basic makeup of the festival to include more rock, blues, country, and other electric-based bands. Renaming itself as the Mariposa Festival, Mariposa has even sought to downplay its identity as a "folk" festival. Mariposa '93 is a collection of material that doesn't quite hold together to make a convincing, coherent album. Unlike the Mariposa albums of the 1970's, this collection was not recorded live at the festival. Although there are some individual gems on the album, these studio-recorded tracks don't have any compelling reason for hanging out together.
